Dan Woods, CEO

CEO
El Camino Health

Dan Woods began his term as Chief Executive Officer in the fall of 2017. Before joining El Camino Hospital he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center, the flagship hospital of WellStar Health System in Georgia, where he oversaw a combined medical staff of over 1,100 employed and independent physicians and 4,700 employees. In addition to the hospital, the Regional Medical Center includes Health Park for outpatient medical needs, ambulatory clinics for pediatrics, imaging and urgent care, a physician’s center, cancer center, and a senior living community, among other services.

 

Prior to WellStar, Woods served as Senior Vice President at Verras Healthcare, a healthcare consulting firm providing services to hospitals by pairing business intelligence with clinical analytics. He served as Vice President of Operations for nine years at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare and concurrently for five years as President and CEO of NM Home Health Care. He spent 12 years at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System serving in multiple leadership roles including President and CEO of CareMed Chicago and Vice President of the health system. With over 25 years of experience serving the healthcare industry, he has championed numerous program development and expansion initiatives to improve the overall patient experience across the continuum of care. Woods has led multi-year improvement strategies that create higher level of efficiencies in hospital operations while improving the overall value for patients.

Laura Keller

Philanthropy Council
El Camino Health Foundation

Laura Keller is a freelance strategy consultant with over a decade of experience in corporate and social sector strategy. She helps organizations improve their performance and drive growth through data and market analysis, business planning, and program evaluation. For the past three years her focus has been on the mental health sector.

 

Prior to launching her independent consultancy, she served as Manager of Strategy and Supply Chain at LYFE Kitchen, an innovative restaurant concept working to bring affordable, healthy food to the masses. Previously, she was an Associate at California Environmental Associates (CEA), where she supported foundations in designing philanthropic strategies to address climate change, and she worked with businesses to measure and reduce their environmental impacts and costs. She also served as Program Manager at the nonprofit Chemical Strategies Partnership, working to reduce chemical use, waste, risks and costs through transformation of the chemical supply chain.

 

Ms. Keller is a member of the Philanthropy Council at El Camino Health Foundation and serves on the Board of the Menlo Park Atherton Education Foundation.

 

Ms. Keller holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business with a Certificate in Public Management and Social Innovation, and BA in Economics and Environmental Studies from Washington University in St. Louis.

Mark Adams, MD

Chief Medical Officer

Mark Adams, MD, FACS, serves as the chief medical officer for El Camino Hospital. He joined the organization in the summer of 2018. Dr. Adams is a board certified vascular surgeon with more than 30 years of diverse healthcare experience including recent executive leadership positions at PeaceHealth and SSM Health. He received his bachelor’s degree and medical degree from University of Pennsylvania.

Nirmaljit Dhami, MD

Medical Director

Scrivner Center for Mental Health & Addiction Services, El Camino Health

Dr. Nirmaljit Dhami is a psychiatrist with extensive experience and expertise in treating mental health issues in adults. She has a special interest in treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in both men and women. And as medical director of El Camino Health's Maternal Outreach Mood Services Program, she works with women who are dealing with mental health or substance abuse issues during pregnancy and after delivery.

 

“We all have to confront the shame and stigma surrounding mental health issues. Recovery is possible from most mental health crises,” she explains.

 

To most thoroughly support her patients, Dr. Dhami takes a team approach that involves OB-GYNs, pediatricians, and partners and families. She strives to offer compassionate care that addresses each individual’s unique needs.

 

Dr. Dhami is well versed in a variety of treatment methods, including psychotherapy, psychopharmacology (medication) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

Outside her practice, Dr. Dhami enjoys swimming, teaching Sunday school and watching golf — especially the U.S. Masters.

Professor Louise Howard is a Professor in Women’s Mental Health at Kings College London and an Honorary Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. She was awarded a prestigious National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Professorship in 2013 and became an NIHR Senior Investigator in 2019. She is President of the International Marcé (perinatal mental health) Society.

Katherine L. Wisner, MD

Katherine L. Wisner obtained her M.S. in Nutrition and an M.D. from Case Western Reserve University, followed by a categorical pediatric internship and general and child psychiatry residency at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School Of Public Health, fellowships in Professional Ethics at Case Western Reserve University and in biomedical ethics at Northwestern University, and the Physician Leadership and Management Program at the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Wisner is board-certified in general and child and adolescent psychiatry.

 

Dr. Wisner is a pioneer in perinatal psychiatry. Her research has advanced our understanding of the natural history of mood disorders across childbearing, benefit-harm decision-making for pharmacotherapy during pregnancy and lactation, and the pharmacokinetics of medications across pregnancy and lactation. She is internationally recognized as an expert in the treatment of mood disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Dr. Wisner has received over $21 million from NIH across her career, and has 250 peer-reviewed publications and 21 book chapters. Her work has far-reaching influence, and has been cited by authors in more than 90 countries.

 

She received the Woman in Science Award from the American Medical Women’s Association in 2011 and the Alexandra Symonds Award from the American Psychiatric Association in 2012. She was awarded the annual APA Award for Research at the meeting in 2017. Dr. Wisner was honored with the Distinguished Mentor Award from the Institute for Clinical Research Education, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2012. She received the Marcè International Society for Perinatal Mental Health’s Medal for lifetime contributions to the field of Perinatal Psychiatry.

 

Dr. Wisner has served on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Psychiatry and currently serves on the Editorial Boards of JAMA Psychiatry and the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. She is a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. With her experience as a past president of the Marcé International Society for Perinatal Mental Health, she developed the business startup plan for the North American Society for Perinatal Mental Health (now Marcé of North America- MONA), and served as its inaugural president.

 

Dr. Wisner enjoys family picnics, perennial gardening and dressage riding and is an avid Pittsburgh Penguins fan!

Nicole Tarui, MD, MPH graduated from David Geffen School Medicine at UCLA and completed her psychiatry residency at University of California, San Francisco. During her training, Dr. Tarui served as chief resident at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and completed additional training in the Women's Mental Health Area of Distinction. She developed a strong interest in both reproductive psychiatry and infant mental health during her training in the Infant Parent Program at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Currently, she serves as the medical director of the MOMS program and has particular interest in peripartum/postpartum mood disorders and infant parent psychotherapy.

Gloria Castro, PsyD.

Child-Parent Research Program, Department of Psychiatry, University of California San Francisco, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital

Dr. Castro is a clinical psychologist and Certified Sexual Assault Counselor. She has extensive practice working with women and young children who have experienced trauma. Dr. Castro was granted the Fraiberg-Harris Fellowship to complete her postdoctoral training at the Infant-Parent Program. She developed and implemented a Perinatal Mental Health project at the Infant-Parent Program. Dr. Castro is currently working at Child Trauma Research Program on the development and implementation of Perinatal Child-Parent Psychotherapy, an adaptation of Child-Parent Psychotherapy during pregnancy and the perinatal period. Dr. Castro provides assessment and psychotherapy to pregnant women with history of traumatic experiences pre-and-postnatal at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH), UCSF. She provides infant mental health services to families and newborns at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and at the Birth Center at ZSFGH. Dr. Castro has a strong interest in the impact of immigration on family systems, the intergenerational transmission of trauma, and the impact of trauma on children’s development. She has presented at national and international conferences, and forums on the topics of perinatal mental health, parenting in a different culture, and on the impact of immigration on the sense of self and motherhood identity.

Maria Seymour St. John
Ph.D., LMFT

Maria Seymour St. John, PhD, MFT is Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco where she serves as Co-Director of Training of the Infant-Parent Program at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. She is also a faculty member of the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California and holds a private practice in Oakland. Dr. St. John has published at the intersections of psychoanalysis and queer, feminist, postcolonial and critical race theory in numerous books and journals. She is endorsed by the CA Center for Infant/Family and Early Childhood Mental Health as a Reflective Supervisor and Mentor, and is a national trainer with the Diversity-Informed Tenets Initiative. Her book Focusing on Relationships: An Effort That Pays was published by ZEROTOTHREE in 2019.

Lauren Perez, Psy.D.

Dr. Perez is a licensed clinical psychologist with the Solid Start Initiative at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH) and Co-Director of Training at the Infant-Parent Program. Dr. Perez provides reflective facilitation and training, Infant, Perinatal, and Child-Parent Psychotherapy, Infant/Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation, and Perinatal Mental Health and Reproductive Justice services both within inpatient and outpatient services at the Women’s Health Clinic and Birth Center at ZSFGH and other community settings. Dr. Perez is the liaison to the Family Treatment Court system partnered with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). As a bilingual/bicultural Latina clinician, she provides trauma informed and culturally responsive direct services, consultation, and reflective facilitation in both English and Spanish.

 

BREAKOUT SESSION 2:
NAVIGATING UNCERTAINTY: PEARLS FROM NICU MOMS
12:30 – 1:30 PM

A peer panel discussion highlighting parent experiences in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Our facilitators will review and discuss opportunities to provide professional support during the NICU stay, transition to home and beyond.

Dr. Sivakumar has been with El Camino NICU and Stanford over two decades. She is currently Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford and Medical Director of NICU in Mountain View Campus. She has witnessed the growth of the Mountain View Campus NICU from Level 2 to high performing Level 3 during her time.

 

Dr. Sivakumar’s training and experience in High-Risk infant follow up led to the development of “Family Centered Care Program” in the NICU in 2016. She believed in parent support during their NICU journey and beyond. Parent support was done for many years by connecting prior NICU families with current parents to give moral support and hope during the difficult days. Parent Buddy Program was officially launched in 2019 by training Parent Mentors. She believes in improving clinical care through quality improvement projects and team work.

Malathi Balasundaram, MD

Clinical Associate Professor
Stanford University

Dr. Balasundaram is a Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford University and a staff neonatologist at El Camino Health, Community Level III NICU. After finishing a neonatology fellowship at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), she joined the Stanford neonatology group. She has been working in the community level III NICU for the past six years. She is the El Camino Health NICU Family-Centered Care committee chair and actively leads different subcommittees to improve NICU quality goals. She implemented discharge education and a parent buddy program in her NICU. Her passion is to provide safe and quality neonatal care in a family-integrated NICU. She also serves in the statewide California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC) Perinatal Quality Improvement Executive panel (PQIP).

Laura Tannenwald, LMFT, is a Program Coordinator with the Scrivner Center for Mental Health & Addiction Services at El Camino Health. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from The University of California, Santa Barbara in Psychology and Sociology and an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego. Laura was licensed in 1996 and has worked in a variety of settings including private practice, social services, adult day treatment and hospital-based care. She has worked in PHP (partial hospital) and IOP (intensive outpatient) at El Camino Hospital for 8 years. In this role she has worked in all of the outpatient specialty programs including MOMS (maternal outreach mood services), Adult Mood and Dual Diagnosis. As a Senior Program Therapist she works in both the Dual Diagnosis (mental health and co-occurring substance use) and Chemical Dependency programs. Laura has specialty training in DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), group therapy and chemical dependency treatment.
